Telugu Marriages have an important event called the Pendlikoothuru Ceremony. This is a kind of purification ceremony. It prepares the girl and boy for the wedding. A paste made out of turmeric and generous smatterings of oil are smeared on their respective bodies. It is also done to make them look their best. They proceed to take a bath after this. They put on a set of fresh new clothes. The girl's hair is decorated with fresh fragrant flowers. She also starts putting on jewelry. This is an important custom in Telugu matrimonial ceremonies
As a part of Telugu matrimonial, there are a set of rituals which are supposed to be carried out by the bridegroom's family as well. In the Snathakam Ritual the groom adorns a sliver thread around his body. There after the skit on “Kashi Yatra” is enacted. In this the bridegroom pretends that he is pushing off to Kashi- the holy place of the Hindus. He flaunts an attitude that he is not interested in taking up the responsibilities of a householder. He agrees to retrace his steps only when the bride's brother makes him see reason.
The Mangala Snaanam custom is carried out thereafter. The prospective bride and groom both take a bath in order to purify themselves. Thus they are prepared to proceed for the next set of sacred rituals to be carried out.
Telugu matrimonial also consists of a few religious ceremonies or “Pujas” which are carried out before the actual wedding ceremony starts.
The palms of the hand are dabbed in oil and spread on the skin of both the bride and groom. After this the family members all gather together in an “Arati” and seek the blessings of the Lord on the marriage to follow. The groom carries out yet another “puja” seeking the blessings of Lord Ganesha.
After this the marriage follows:
Kanyadaan in a Telegu Marriage :This is the ceremony in which the girl's father officially hands over his daughter to the groom. It is interesting to note that the girl is seated in a bamboo basket and carried to the “mandapam” ( wedding dais ) by the girl's maternal uncle. The boy and girl get a glimpse of each other only after the wedding rituals are over. The bride's family express their veneration for the groom by washing his feet with their own hands.
The priest recite verses from the Vedas while the wedding ceremony is going on in full swing. The Jeelakarra Bellamu and Madhuparkam custom is carried out. The couple are expected to smear a paste made out of cumin seeds and jaggery on each other hands. This custom symbolizes the establishment of a permanent bond between the couple. The boy and girl both where clothes made out of white and red as these colors symbolize purity and strength respectively. The girl is accompanied by ten married ladies who are called “ sumangalis”. The bridegroom now puts the “Mangassutra” around the girl's neck. It is a necklace made out of black beads and gold and stands for permanency. The girl is expected to have it on all her life. The couple now garland each other. They take seven steps around the holy fire. The ends of their flowing garments are tied together for this crucial ceremony. The groom now slips on silver rings on the girls toes.
The new daughter-in -law is now warmly welcomed by her husband's family.
