Tamil weddings are not held in the months of Aashad (15th July to 15th August), Bhadrapad (15th September to 15th October) and Shunya (15th December to 15th January) as they are considered inauspicious.
The Tamil matrimonial customs do not allow the prospective bride and the groom to meet after the horoscopes are matched. An auspicious day is fixed for the marriage.

The Tamil Matrimonial ceremony begin with "Panda Kaal Muhurtham". The prayer to the family deity is offered and everyone seeks for the God's blessings. It is customary is visit the would-be brides home a day before marriage. The bride's family receives them cordially and offers sweets, sugar candies, and flowers. Then the brother of the prospective bride applies tilak on the forehead of the groom and puts a garland round his neck. Immediately after that the bride's mother offers sweets to those who accompany the groom. Breaking coconut on ground is considered auspicious.
Another major Tamil matrimonial practice is "Pallikai Thellichal" . The married women from the both the families fills clay pots with nine variety of grains and sprinkles water on it. The pots filled with grains are then immersed in a pond so that the fishes can have them and bless the couples.
"Mangalam Snanam" or auspicious bath is carried out on the morning of the wedding day. After that the bridegrooms tries to deceive others expressing his disinterest in marriage. The bride's father tries to show him reason and manages to persuade the groom to take his daughter's responsibility. From there the groom goes to the pandal, where the marriage ceremony will occur. He was there received by the bride.
The couple then interchanges garlands with each for three times. This ritual is fun filled. After exchanging garlands, the couple sits on a swing where they are offered milk and bananas.
Kanyadan is the next step of Tamil wedding. The bride's mother puts kajal in the grooms eyes. Then his father in law washes his feet. The girl is then seated on her father's lap. She has a coconut in her hand. The coconut is then offered to the groom, which signifies the giving away of daughter. The girl is then presented a sari and Mangalsutra.
The bride again enters the mandap after wearing the sari, which was to her. The girl's father then sits on a sack of paddy and the girl again sits in her fathers lap. Then the groom ties mangalsutra around her neck. Then the couple, holding each others hands, circles round the sacred fire for seven times. This ritual is known as Saptapadi. The marriage ends when the newly wed couple asks for blessings from all the elderly people.
