Karnataka is located in the southern part of India. The people of Karnataka are known for their uncomplicated nature. The simplicity of lifestyle is reflected in their marriages. Though Kannada Matrimonial ceremony are more or less simple yet it is a cheerful affair.
When the parents of the prospective groom and bride agree for the match, the union of the couple is formalized by a betel leaf and supari. This is known in Kannada Matrimonial custom as "Nischay Tamulan". The family priest matches the horoscope of the prospective groom and bride. He also fixes the wedding date and time of the marriage.

Nandi is a sort of ceremony where the family deity is invoked. It is done to seek the blessings of the Gods so that the marriage can be completed without any trouble. The God is offered coconut and the first invitation card is given to the deity.
The first custom that is performed on the wedding day is Mandap Puja. It is done to make the venue sacred for performing marriage. Then the girl's father brings the groom to the mandap and washes his feet and offers him silk dhoti and pitambar. This ritual is called Var Puja.
The main Kannada Matrimonial customs begin when the bride groom starts for the girl's home after seeking the blessings of the Gods and elders of his family. A possession of relatives from the grooms side accompanies him. On reaching the wedding venue the married women of the girl's side welcomes him by performing aarti. The married women are called Sumangalis.
Kaashi Yatre is a mischievous ritual. The groom pretends that he is getting angry because no one is searching a bride for him. He playfully threatens that he is leaving for Kaashi, a holy place in India, and is not willing to perfrom the duties of a married man. Then the maternal uncle of the bride brings the girl before him and offers her hands to him.
Then the girl and the boy is led to the wedding venue. The bride is not allowed to show her face. She covers her face with a fan of peacock feathers. The couple is then separated by a white cloth and Vedic mantras are chanted. After that it is removed, and the couple interchanges garlands with one another.
The bride is given away to the groom in a ceremony known as “Dhare Herdu”. The girl's father gives her hands to the boy which signifies that she is now his wife. The father in law then pours water into their hands. After that the couple circles round the holy fire for seven times.
A knot is tied with the dress of the bride and the attire of the groom to symbolize their union. The newly wed couple then leaves for the groom's home after seeking the blessings of the elders. The Kannada marriage is thus completed.
Kannada Wedding Attire : The bridegroom usually wears a dhoti, Angavastram or inner wear and a pheta or turban. He carries a stick by his right hand. The bride wears Navari sari and green glass bangles. She also wears traditional gold ornaments.
