Most people of Gujarat prefer a less qualifies bride. They also leave the decision of the marriage on the boy and the girl. After the match making episode gets over, the pre marriage rituals begins.

Gujarati matrimonial customs and traditions :
The Gujarati matrimonial ritual commences by offering prayers to Lord Ganesha. Both the grooms family and the brides family seeks the blessing of the God. This ritual is known as Mandap Mahurat. After this Griha Shanti Puja is held. It is arranged at the grooms as well as at the bride's wife. Then follows the mehendi ceremony and sangeet.

On the wedding the day the mother of the bride and the groom dress themselves in fine clothes and carry earthen water pots. They carry the pots up to the doorway of their homes. The son in law of each family cuts the water with a knife. It symbolizes that they are warding off evil elements.

The wedding starts off with a ritual called “Ponkvu”, where the mother in law welcomes the groom and then tries to grab his nose. She then make him ask for her daughters hands. This ritual turns out to be very hilarious to those who are watching.

The most important part of the wedding ceremony is the exchange of garlands between the bride and the groom.  After Jaimala and Madhupakra, Kanyadan and Hasta Milap takes place. Kanyadan is the ceremony where the brides father gives his daughter's hands to his son in law. It happens before a lit up fire. Then Pheras around the fire takes place. After the marriage ceremony gets over, the couples seeks blessings of the elders.

Some of the popular songs used in Gujarati weddings are Avai Aavi Naajuk Nammi Bhabhi Re, Aangne Aasopaal Na Jad, Mandavada Maan Mangaliyan Vaartaay Re, mangal Geeto Gavaay Chhe halimali Ne Haalo Saheli, Aaj Re Anand No Divas, Beel Peeli Paankh No Bhamarlo Re, Aa Dash Aa Dash Peeplo Aa dash Dash Dadana, Aakashe Aapya Dharti Maata Ae Zheelya, Aacherun Kankoodun Ghole Ho Laadi and Dheere Re Chedo Re Dholi Dholka.
