West Bengal is a state located in the eastern part of India. The people in Bengal are known as Bengalis. The people of Bengal are peaceful in nature and maintains a simple lifestyle. The Bengali Matrimonial customs are thus simple but the rituals are meaningful. The Bengali Weddings have various interesting traditions. It is also a sort of family get together which enables people to spend time with friends and relatives.
Once the elders of both the families agrees to the marriage they allow the would-be couples to interact with each. The boy and girl meets each other and if they agree to carry on with it the family Brahmin is called to fix an auspicious date for the marriage.

A traditional Bengali marriage follows many pre-wedding rituals. It starts with “Vridhi Puja”. This Bengali matrimonial custom takes place a day before the marriage. Lord Narayan is invoked and colorful rangolis/alpanas are made. This ritual is conducted to pay respect to the ancestors of the would-be bride and groom.
Dodhi Mangal Ceremony is carried out at dawn of the wedding day. A married couple along with five married women goes to fetch water from the near by pond or tap. The water is remained stored in the girl's house. It is used when the newly wed couple visits the bride's home after eight days of the marriage. It is followed by a meal which consist of cooked rice, fried fish and other delicious food items.
Ashirwad is a specific Bengali matrimonial ceremony arranged on the wedding day. The boy's family comes to the girl's house and blesses her. They also presents her many gifts which is called “Tatwa”. Along with that they also bring a turmeric paste which will be used in the ritual called “Gaye Halud”. The bride will use it before bathing. Conch shells are blown while carrying out any auspicious event. It is a dominant feature of Bengali matrimonial custom.
When the groom reaches the door step of the wedding venue he is warmly received by the girl's family. An elderly woman from the bride's side welcomes him with a “Baran Dala”. He is then taken to the inside of the house and is given sweets and refreshing drinks.
As the time of wedding arrives, the bride is taken to the “mandap” by four or five male members of her family. She remains seated in a wooden “piri.” She is not allowed to reveal her face and covers it with two betel leaves. She then circles the groom for seven times and finally the two are allowed to make eye contact which is known as “Subho Drishti”. Then they garland each other. It is a very fun filled episode and the relatives and friends usually express their happiness by cheering and blowing conch shells.
The rest of the marriage is performed before the holy fire by a priest. The bride's father gives her daughters hands to the groom while chanting Sanskrit mantras. It is called “Sampradan”. The boy and the girl then vows to remain with one another for rest of their life. The marriage ends after the newly wed couple seeks the blessing of the elders of the family. The groom applies vermilion on the head of her wife a day after the marriage.
Bengali Matrimonial Attire :
It is customary for the groom to wear dhoti and kurta. It also wears a “topor”on his head. Th bride wears gorgeous sari called Benarasi. She also sports traditional ornaments made of gold.
